Workshop Registration

Angela McHale
"How Not to Burst Your Bubble:
Hollow Sculpting in Boro"
June 20 - 23 (4-day workshop)

In this intermediate level workshop students will learn to use the breath, heat, gravity, and tools to make hollow sculpture in borosilicate glass. Starting with abstract shapes, faces and sea creatures we will discuss the importance of wall thickness while getting familiar with the tools and "rules" of sculpting hollow glass. Students will explore shaping, adding texture and project planning. As we progress we will cover more challenging projects such as complex forms like the human figure and sculpting hollow attachments. By the end of the workshop students will have a full understanding of how to transform an ordinary glass tube into a spectacular work of art.

This class meets from 9am to 5pm each day, Tuesday through Friday, with additional studio time Tuesday through Thursday from 5pm to 9pm. Materials for participating in the course are included. If you have specific colors you are interested in working with please bring them with you.

Angela McHale earned her BFA with a concentration in glass from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2017. Since then she has continually worked in glass and has taught at Snow Farm, Diablo Glass School, Salem Community College and various other private and public glass studios. Angela's work grapples with concepts such as impact, loss, and the apocalypse.  Her work is inspired by lore, science and current events, most notably the climate crisis. Recently she has been working in plasma and utilizing light in her work as a metaphor for the soul and to draw a connection between the noble gasses used in plasma/neon and our planets' changing atmosphere.

Angela earned an associates degree in Scientific Glass Technology from Salem Community College in the spring of 2021. Since then she has been using the skills acquired there to advance the technical and conceptual aspects of her work.
